Wilson buries Southern Cloud in season opener

Wilson kicked off its 2019 football season Friday night with a dramatic win over Southern Cloud at Miltonvale.

The final score was 50-0 — which included seven touchdowns for Wilson and 361 rushing yards, compared to 75 for Southern Cloud.

The first touchdown of the game came in the first quarter, when Wilson’s Westin Hughes handed off the ball at the 13-yard line and Camryn Eberhart ran the ball 10 yards into the Warriors’ end zone. The PAT failed.

Despite a number of first downs for Wilson, the score remained at 6-0 until the second quarter when Hughes handed the ball to Eberhart, who ran it from the 18 to 8-yard line before being tackled. On the next play, Hughes handed off the ball to Cooper Weinhold, who carried it into the end zone from the 11-yard line. Hughes took the ball into the end zone for the PAT, bringing the score to 14-0.

Another Hughes to Weinhold pass later in the period, plus a 2-point conversion by Eberhart took the score to 22-0 at the end of the quarter.

Three plays into the third quarter, Eberhart ran 30 yards for another touchdown The score was 30-0 with the PAT.

Wilson picked up two more touchdowns in the third quarter, which ended with a score of 44-0.

The final touchdown of the game came on the last play. Hughes handed off the ball at the 11-yard line to Hughes, who ran the ball into the Warriors’ end zone.

Statistics from the game showed Wilson dominating Southern Cloud in about every category. The Dragons had 22 first downs, compared to four for the Warriors; Wilson had possession of the ball for 36 minutes. Southern Cloud had it for 12 minutes.

The Dragons will take the field again at 7 p.m. Friday against the Lincoln Leopards at Lincoln.
