GYPSUM — The Ellsworth cross country team traveled to Southeast of Saline Sept. 19.As the Bearcats started the day, it began to get increasingly hotter and windier, making for “less than ideal conditions,” as head coach Eric Coonrod put it. The team still ran well.

The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission announced Sept. 15 that fall turkey hunting season in the state has been canceled. The decision comes after wildlife biologists urged the commission to cancel it due to declining population of the birds throughout the state.

The need for more coroners in Ellsworth County was a main topic of discussion at Monday’s county commission meeting.EMS Director Nathan Florian said there are several deputy coroners — Dr. Jerzy Slomoka, Dr. Ronald Whitmer and Dr. Easton Casey. Shawn McGowan serves as a special deputy coroner.

During the morning of Sept. 5, divers recovered the body of Andrew M. Jauch, 52, Colorado, at Wilson Lake.According to the Russell County Sheriff Fred J. Whitman, through investigation it was learned that the boat Jauch was riding in had broken down and that he had jumped into the water to cool off.
