Study to determine whether old hospital needs remediation

After years of rumors and speculation, the old Ellsworth County Hospital will be studied for asbestos and other contamination. The effort, through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Brownfield Assessment program, comes at no cost to the city.

HOLYROOD — Discussion of what to do with the former school building in Bushton was front and center at Monday’s meeting of the Central Plains USD 112 board of education. Davis Jimenez began the discussion by saying he wants to purchase the building for weapons and firearms training.

Local COVID cases increase

The number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in Ellsworth County increased over the weekend. At Monday’s meeting of Ellsworth County commissioners, Kerianne Ehrlich, supervisor of the county health department, said the two additional cases were connected to previous cases.

Kerianne Ehrlich, supervisor of the Ellsworth County Health Department, had some stunning news for county commissioners Monday during their weekly meeting. Ehrlich said over the July 4 holiday weekend, seven cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Ellsworth County.

Wilson Council acts after public hearings

WILSON — The Wilson City Council conducted three 30-minute public hearings Monday before the regular council meeting for property owners who received violation notices from the city board of health. The first hearing was with Kristofer Ritchie, owner of the property at 408 24th St.

Commissioners opt out of mask mandate

Ellsworth County’s three commissioners voted unanimously July 2 to approve Resolution 2020-R-10, opting the county out of Gov. Laura Kelly’s executive order No. 20-52 requiring masks or other face coverings be worn in public as of 12 a.m. Friday, July 3.
