Dr. Roger Carl Schoenfeldt
(1935-2026)
Dr. Roger Carl Schoenfeldt, age 90, of Murray, Ky., passed away June 18, 2026, at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital.
Roger was born on Dec. 9, 1935, in Independence, Kan., to the late Carl “Cap” and Anne Emma (Shuler) Schoenfeldt. He attended and graduated from the Independence school system, where he spent his youth as a multi-sport athlete, competing in football, basketball and track with his childhood best friends. He graduated from Independence High School in 1954 and, upon graduation, attended Independence Community College and Washburn University, where he held an athletic scholarship and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
After graduating from college, Roger served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and later worked for General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco, Texas, and Mayfield, Ky. On Nov. 30, 1963, he married his wife, Adelaide Robbins, in Mayfield.
He received his master’s in management in 1968 from Murray State University in Murray, Ky., and his Ph.D. in management from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., in 1978, where he also taught management and statistics. During his 39-year tenure at Murray State, Dr. Schoenfeldt served as department chairman, published numerous papers and texts and taught numerous classes within the Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business. He also volunteered as a faculty adviser for Beta Gamma Sigma Scholastic Honor Society and as an adviser to Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity. Roger was dedicated to his students, staff and faculty at Murray State, fostering lifelong friendships and a commitment to educating and providing opportunities for growth for students. He was passionate about traveling and about the unique educational experiences offered by programs abroad that allowed business students to visit various countries.
He participated in professor exchange programs with universities in Germany and Hong Kong.
Beyond his career, Roger enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, golfing, reading and watching various sporting events. When he wasn’t grading papers or teaching, he could be found at Murray State football and basketball games, cheering on the Racers, and, from afar, the Arkansas Razorbacks. He was a wonderful conversationalist. He could discuss world events or the latest movie release. He always had something to say and a new perspective to share.
He loved animals, adored his cat, Belle, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was a kind man whose commitment and responsibility to his family will never be forgotten.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Adelaide Robbins Schoenfeldt; daughter Caroline Schoenfeldt; sisters Phyllis Elaine Miller and Julia ( Judy) Leathers; brothers-in-law Patrick Miller, Charles Leathers and Kent Robbins; and nephews Michael Miller and Hal Leathers.
