Academic, athletic success

A tough hombre

George Brown was the 10th man to accept the position of city marshal in the booming cattle town of Caldwell, Kan. The town was founded on the Chisholm Trail just above the border with Indian Territory in 1871. Texas cowboys roamed the streets at will and violence was never far away.

REMEMBERING

On Oct. 4, with the passing of former Mayor Mike Peschka, Wilson lost one of its greatest champions.Perhaps Wilson City Clerk Susan Kriley said it best.“He always had Wilson’s best interest at heart,” she said.I would whole-heartedly agree with Susan’s assessment.

A noted character

One of my favorite characters of old west Kansas was a gambler by the name of Bobby Gill. His name has come up in several stories, but never as the main attraction, which made the newspaper article on the front page of the Oct.
