BACK TO NORMAL

Fall harvest has come to a screeching halt for my family. We have had some minor issues that have slowed us down, but those issues are always expected during the marathon known as fall harvest. We began back in August picking corn.

Plumbing over politics

“Republicans shouldn’t thresh with Democrats.” My father was imparting wisdom upon me, something he’d heard from his father, learned on their farm in Kansas. Wisdom that maybe we could use today. I’d probably better translate.

Valiant Veteran Sam

Confederate Gen. Sterling Price’s forces were in full retreat from his Missouri Campaign after a series of defeats beginning at West Port on Oct. 23. The Leavenworth Times of Nov. 3, 1864, published a letter from Union Gen. James Blunt dated Oct.

COVID, PART II

It hasn’t been the best few days for Ellsworth County commissioners. About a week ago, Kermit Rush and Steve Dlabal learned they had been exposed to the cornavirus during a regular Monday commission meeting at the courthouse. Into quarantine they went.

Pondering endings

Fall is winding down on our farm. Brown grass is hidden beneath piles of colorful leaves that have fallen. Wheat drilled last month has popped up providing a spiky looking cover to fields for the winter. Corn and soybeans have been harvested and shipped off to the elevator.

Across Kansas in 1871

In the autumn of 1871, Rose Georgina Kingsley traveled from England to America chronicling her experiences in the book South by West, or Winter in the Rocky Mountains and Spring in Mexico, published in 1874.

REST OF THE STORY

Letter to the Editor: It was with great interest that I read the article titled “Cattlemen question policy”, in the Oct. 8 issue of the Independent-Reporter.

Down to turnout

There’s an old cliché that’s become something of an inside joke among people who follow politics a little too closely, me included. “It all comes down to turnout.” On the surface, it’s a meaningless tautology, similar to saying the winner of a football game will be the team with the most points.

Searching for the West

Rose Georgina Kingsley experienced the rare opportunity of travel from England to America in “the Autumn of 1871.” John Howson, the Dean of Chester Cathedral, had been invited to speak to the Episcopal Church Convention of the United States in Baltimore.

Lean on God during these trying times

It is OK for Christians to acknowledge when they are feeling depressed, helpless, anxious and afraid. Christians openly acknowledge that we are only human and therefore we have human frailty ... Being in a pandemic heightens our sense of helplessness and lack of control.
