Golf teams compete at Hoisington

HOISINGTON — The Ellsworth and Central Plains High School boys’ golf teams opened their seasons Thursday, April 4, at the Hoisington Invitational Tournament. The Bearcats shot a 413 and finished in sixth place. WaKeeney-Trego won the team title with a 367.

Hard work is hallmark of Oiler track teams

Potential is the name of the game for this year’s Central Plains’ track teams. “We had a young girls’ team last season overall and return all of them, along with gaining some more freshmen,” said Dustin Robison, who is in his eighth season as Oiler head coach.

Oeser, Lamatsch earn firsts at Lyons

LYONS — The Central Plains Oilers boys’ and girls’ teams competed at the Lyons Invitational track meet Friday afternoon at Wheaton Field. Out of the 10 girls’ high school teams competing, Central Plains tied with Little River for sixth Lyons with 75 points. Central Plains earned 22 points.

‘Cat track team hits the road to Russell

RUSSELL — The Ellsworth High School track and field teams kicked off the 2019 season on the road during the Russell Invitational on Friday at Shaffer Field. Other high school teams competing in the meet were Russell, Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic, Plainville and Thomas More Prep-Marian.

Bearcats return two All-League players to team

Seniors Grant Gwinner and Bransen Schulte, who both earned places on the 2018 All-League baseball team, lead this season’s Ellsworth team. In all, the Bearcats return nine varsity athletes, four of them starters, from this past year.

Eight seniors lead Lady ‘Cats on softball field

The Lady Bearcats softball team lost six seniors to graduation from 2018; however, eight seniors have stopped up this season to lead a team that already has wins against Beloit and Russell.

Ellsworth’s Oberle is first
