Activities planned for newspaper’s 150th birthday

During its more than century of existence, Ellsworth County has experienced such extraordinary events as fires, floods and cattle drives and such individual milestones as weddings, births and graduations.

Fire consumes garage

Fire gutted a garage, but no injuries were reported during an Aug. 4 blaze at 221 N. Court Ave. in Ellsworth.Firefighters were dispatched at about 2:30 p.m. following the report of an explosion and fire on the property owned by Eric Buchholz and Cara Dailey.

Suspect charged for homicide

Saline County authorities have charged a suspect in the murder of 44-yearold Nathan Thompson, whose body was found July 19 in an Ellsworth County field.Joseph Benton Houseman, 48, Salina, made his first appearance Tuesday in Saline County District Court.

William “Billy” Errette Day (1952-2022)

William “Billy” Errette Day, 70, of Salina, and a life-long resident of Lincoln County, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022. Billy was born March 18, 1952, in Lincoln, Kan., to Wilborn “Bill” and Mary Jane Day. Billy grew up in the Westfall area attending elementary school in Lincoln and Westfall, Jr.

Darrell D. Vaughan (1954-2022)

Darrell D. Vaughan of Kansas City, Kan., lost his battle with Huntington’s Disease, Sunday, July 24, 2022, in his Lorraine, Kan. home.He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora and Pete; sister Carolyn; and brother Gene.

Irene Catherine Mattas (1929-2022)

Irene Catherine Mattas passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at the Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson, Kan. at the age of 93. She was born on March 17, 1929, in Odin, Kan. to Joseph and Mary (Lamatsch) Demel, she was the last surviving of 13 siblings.
