Yearbook students at Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School returned home from regional journalism competition with a dozen awards. The students will now compete at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association’s State Journalism Contest Saturday, May 2, at the University of Kansas.

Kanopolis Lake cleanup meets expectations after 2019 flooding

KANOPOLIS LAKE — “Wow, what a day,” public service administrator of Kanopolis State Park Wendy Bowles said of the most recent trail cleanup day, Saturday Feb. 22, at Kanopolis Lake. Volunteers met at Mushroom State Park at 9 a.m. to register and get their assignments.

Caring Families of Ellsworth County will provide free peanut butter and jelly sandwiches March 13-22 for all Ellsworth High School students and anyone else who is hungry during spring break week. Distribution will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

These are emotional days for Wilson’s Bob Powers and the girls’ basketball team he guided to a 6-15 season. This will be Powers final year of coaching girls’ basketball. His retirement comes after a 20-year career at Wilson, the last two as head coach of the Lady Dragons.

Local sports field project moves ahead

Members of the Ellsworth City Council took another step Monday night in the development of a sports complex field on the west side of Kansas Highway 156, north of the city cemetery.

The Midway Extension District’s annual 4-H Club Day was Feb. 23. Clubs from Ellsworth and Russell competed in various events at Wilson High School.
