Other than brief visits about our families at Kansas Press Association meetings, I didn’t know Joan Meyer well. Her husband, on the other hand, was a legend in the Kansas newspaper community.
Last week, I attended a standing-room-only meeting to hear more about the 2024 Big Kansas Road Trip.I confess, before Ellsworth County was announced as a destination, I’d never heard of the event. I was, however, familiar with its predecessor, the Kansas Sampler Festival.
In 1867 Ellsworth was the latest railroad boomtown as the Union Pacific Railway Company, Eastern Division, built the first railroad on the Kansas prairies. One thousand men were busy surveying, grading the roadbed and laying track on a line from Salina, Kan.

The election is over. The votes are tallied. The effort to dissolve USD 112 did not pass. As expected, the vote was heavily split across county lines.Now, it’s time to move forward. Unfortunately, an election doesn’t mean the slate is wiped clean. Words were spoken, issues are still unresolved.

Carneiro Cemetery needs deeds Dear Editor, I have found out that no deeds were created, never, none, zero, at Carneiro Cemetery.That stated, I want my two deeds. In order to help facilitate deed creation, I will help make out all deeds for those living with plots.
Tent camping in July in Kansas usually isn’t on my list of ways to spend a weekend, yet, I recently found myself slowly sinking into an air mattress with a clear view of the stars through a thin mesh canopy, which served as my only protection from the elements.
