Competing with the bigs

This weekend, I attended the Kansas Press Association convention for the second time as publisher of the I-R.Friday night was filled with trivia, which I am impressively terrible at, and Saturday was filled with breakout sessions.

Witness

The Col. Henry Dodge expedition of 1835 set out from Fort Leavenworth to council with the Plains tribes along the Platte River valley and those along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Dodge had a squadron of 125 First United States Dragoons at his disposal.

A response to Roger Pearson’s letter in the May 25 letter to the Ellsworth Indy-Reporter.I was privileged to have Alice Peterka as a teacher at Wilson High School early in her career. I only had her for one class, but one memory I have was after graduation and attending college.

Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827 in response to an 1824 citizen’s petition to Congress asking for military protection for traders operating along the Santa Fe Trail. The 1827 establishment of Cantonment Leavenworth developed into an important post relating to Indian affairs.

CLOSING A CHAPTER

I was intrigued with the article about Alice Peterka in the May 4 edition of the Indy-Reporter. While I do not personally know her, to realize she was a dedicated educator at Wilson Jr./Sr. High School for 54 consecutive years was a remarkable achievement.

Reflecting on first year

The end of the 20222023 school year has come — and what a year it was! When I arrived for this new position roughly 11 months ago, I was thrilled to become part of USD 327 and the Ellsworth, Kanopolis and Geneseo communities.
