SESSION’S END

The wrap-up or veto session is complete. Passing a budget was at the top of the list, and the conference committee members between the House and Senate worked to deliver a solution. Many budgets have not been increased in several years.

Another time and place

According to the May 3, 1872, Wichita City Eagle, two men “were on a spree” in one of Wellington’s saloons. The paper reported that their names were Lynch and Hopkins. The inevitable argument ensued.

The presses keep running

Almost 20 years ago, Sharon Montague and I left our jobs at the Salina Journal to publish our first edition of the Ellsworth County Independent. Not everyone applauded the decision.

Dear Editor, A recent letter to the I-R stated that “the need for amino acids is only supplied from animal meats.” This will be news to hundreds of millions of Hindus and Jains. They are vegetarians, as were their ancestors for thousands of years.

A hallmark of life on the plains is weather that is predictably unpredictable. Certainly, weather patterns can be projected. Forecasts can be turned out, but even the most proficient meteorologist will admit that the weather on the plains can turn violent with very little warning.
