Ellsworth County will be well represented later this month at state track and field competition this weekend in Wichita.

SALINA — The Ellsworth Bearcats boys’ golf team has been making strides all season long. Despite a tough NCAA League golf tournament Thursday at Salina Municipal Golf Course, Head Coach Kevin Haxton is pleased with the team’s progress as golfers head into the regional and state tournaments.

PRAIRIE VILLAGE — Ellsworth’s No. 1 singles player Joey Oberle took second place at the 2019 Class 3-2-1A Boys’ state tennis tournament this past weekend in Prairie Village. Oberle, who finished in first place at regionals, entered the state tournament with a 28-1 record.

SALINA — Several firstplace finishes on the Lady ‘Cats track team helped the Ellsworth girls clinch fifth place Friday at the NCAA League track and field meet hosted by Salina’s Sacred Heart at Kansas Wesleyan University. The Ellsworth boys’ team also took fifth place.

PLAINVILLE — The Ellsworth High School Lady ‘Cats softball team easily defeated the Plainville Cardinals Friday during a double-header. Ellsworth made quick work of Plainville in the first game, defeating the Cardinals 12-4.

Not bad for a small meet. The skies cleared long enough for a small but talented field to compete Friday in Ellinwood. One state leader emerged from the meet. The Lady Cats finished fourth in the field behind Sterling, Ellinwood, and St. John.

WAKEENEY — The Ellsworth High School boys’ tennis team swept the Class 3-2-1A regional tennis tournament May 2 at WaKeeney. The Bearcats’ No. 1 singles’ player Joey Oberle and No.

After spending the last two games on the road, the Ellsworth Lady ‘Cats were home this past week with doubleheaders against Little River April 18 and Beloit April 16.
