Bearcat Teagon Nienke headed to Substate

HILLSBORO — Ellsworth Junior-Senior High School Bearcat wrestler Teagon Nienke, a senior, punched his ticket to substate competition by taking third place with a 2-1 record Feb. 12, at the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s 3-2-1-A Regionals in Hillsboro.

‘Cat wrestlers off to regional

Seven Bearcat wrestlers have qualified for district competition Friday, Feb 12, at Hillsboro. Advancing to regionals are: • Loden West, 152 lbs., 1st. • Tyler Romero, 195 lbs., 1st. • Teagon Nienke, 106 lbs., 1st. • Brad Vopat, 160 lbs., 4th. • Dan Andalon, 126 lbs., 4th.

Ellsworth celebrates seniors with win

The Bearcat boys buried Beloit, 57-39, Friday night in a non-conference game at Ellsworth. It was senior night and two seniors — Avery Haxton and Braden Schulte — led the ‘Cats in scoring. Haxton dropped 22 points in the basket and Schulte contributed 13 points.

Nienke takes top spot

Ellsworth’s Teagon Nienke took 1st place in his weight category Friday at the Hoisington Cardinal Classic wrestling tournament. Other Bearcat wrestlers also came home with medals: * Eryk Andalon 2nd (145 lbs.) * Loden West 3rd (152 lbs.) * Brad Vopat 3rd (160 lbs.

‘Cats win double over Plainville

Monday night was a good time to be a Bearcat. The Ellsworth boys and girls played Plainville at home, and for the second time this season, both teams walked away with a regular season win the same night. The girls won 45-36; the boys posted a 58-37 win over the Cardinals.

Oilers have a mixed week

The Lady Oilers took a close loss Tuesday night to Hesston, 36-42. Central Plains fell behind early, trailing 3-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Oilers battled back, outscoring the Eagles in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, tying the game going into the 4th.

Oiler girls add another tournament win

The No. 1 ranked Central Plains Lady Oilers ended this past week’s St. John Midwinter Classic Saturday with three players in double digits and another title to their record. Central Plains rolled to the championship with a score of 64-40 over tournament host St. John.

Bearcats compete at Winter Jam

The Ellsworth Bearcats captured third place this past week at Hoisington’s Winter Jam. The ‘Cats were stopped Friday on their way to the championship game by Hoisington, the tournament’s No. 1 seed and eventual champion. The final score in the hard-fought game was 50-46.

Romero wins 1st place in weight bracket

Ellsworth’s Tyler Romero took first place Friday in his 195-pound weight category at the Larned Wrestling Invitational. Romero, a senior with an 11-2 win-loss record, recorded a fall at the 4:41 mark over Toby Woodworth of Ellsworth, a senior with a 15-6 record.

Ellsworth fall to Beloit 62-54

The Ellsworth High School Bearcats Boys Basketball Team lost on the road Jan. 12 in a heartbreaker to the Beloit Trojans, 51-62. After Beloit jumped out to a 1-0 lead, Bearcat senior Braden Schulte scored 3 points to put Ellsworth in the lead.
