Over the last two years, Rob Van Vleet has been slowly scrapping the last vestiges of Kimball, Nebraska’s first wind farm. The wind turbines are made to be sturdy, he said, but they don’t last forever — about 20 years.

Central Plains drafts road map to future

HOLYROOD — Designing a road map for the future of the Central Plains USD 112 school district began Aug. 27, during the first meeting of the district’s Futures Committee at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood.

Wider, faster K-140

The road between Ellsworth and Salina is mostly rough to Brookville; however, when the resurfacing work is done — probably by winter — Kansas Highway 140 is expected to be wider with a speed limit faster than the current 55 miles an hour.

Marty Sauers never considered a career in corrections. That is, until his wife, Cherie, suggested it. Sauers, who graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations/journalism, originally thought he would have a career as a lobbyist for the Coors Brewing Co.

Tyson fire affects beef producers

Beef producers around the United States, including those close to home here in the Midway District, have been affected by the recent fire at a Tyson Fresh Meats facility near Holcomb. The fire broke out Friday August 9 and destroyed most of the facility.

Waterfowl blind permit drawing scheduled at Kanopolis Lake

MARQUETTE — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Kanopolis Lake recently announced the annual waterfowl blind permit drawing will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Kanopolis Lake Information Center, 105 Riverside Drive, Marquette.
