There’s only a few days remaining until this year’s Ellsworth Cowtown Days celebration kicks off, and Malinda Cunningham is busy.

KANOPOLIS — After a 20-minute public hearing and review Aug. 13, the Kanopolis City Council approved the 2020 city budget as presented. The city’s total budget authority increased for 2020 — from $470,756 in 2019 to $818,215 for 2020. The increase was largely due to the city’s water project.

Grain prices mixed for the week Prices paid for grain at the Ellsworth Co-op at the end of the business day, Monday, Aug. 12, were: Wheat, bu. — $3.56, down 35 cents from Aug. 5. Milo, bu. — $3.05, down 20 cents. Soybeans, bu. — $7.49, up 10 cents. Corn, bu. — $3.55, down 20 cents.

Members of the Ellsworth City Council voted to publish the 2020 budget, a copy of which appears on Page A7 of this week’s Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. Officials took advantage of a higher valuation to keep the mill levy roughly the same as in 2019.

After a 30-minute public hearing Monday, Ellsworth County commissioners approved the 2020 budget as presented. The 2020 budget has a total budget authority of $11,614,609 — an increase of $3,445,790 from 2019. The estimated mill levy for 2020 dropped 2.832 mills — from 51.702 in 2019 to 48.

HOLYROOD — The Central Plains USD 112 board of education approved the 2020 budget Monday after a 30-minute public hearing at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood.

Work started this week on the resurfacing and widening of K-140 in Ellsworth and Saline counties. The project begins at the K-14/K-140 intersection in Ellsworth and continues east for about 33 miles to the I-135/K-140 intersection.
