Local schools look beyond coronavirus

Administrators and board members of the Ellsworth-Kanopolis-Geneseo School District observed the first anniversary of the coronavirus officially being declared a pandemic by looking forward — to a time when district policy will not revolve around COVID-19.

CLAFLIN — A motion to move forward with drafting a policy on random student drug testing failed at Monday’s meeting of the Central Plains USD 112 board of education.

Wilson City

WILSON — Questions by patron Kristopher Ritchie about the city’s plans to purchase buildings topped the agenda during Monday’s meeting of the Wilson City Council. Mayor Mike Peschka said the city purchased the historic former Otasco building at 2504 Ave.

Job fair planned this week at Lucas by Great Plains

Great Plains Mfg. and Land Pride will conduct an area job fair in Lucas, to find qualified applicants to support recent company growth at its Tipton and Lucas manufacturing facilities. The company has openings at both locations in welding, assembly, fabrication/machine shop, and more.

Cover crops and grazing workshop set

Two soils specialists will headline a workshop March 25 and March 26 at Salina’s Hilton Garden Inn. Candy Thomas works in Kansas and Nebraska and Stan Boltz specialists in conditions in North Dakota and South Dakota. Both work for the National Resources and Conservation Service.

AG called to investigate KORA complaint

The Kansas Attorney General’s office in Topeka has been called to investigate a complaint filed under the Kansas Open Records Act against the Ellsworth City Council. Patrick Hoffman, city attorney, updated members of the Ellsworth City Council on the matter at Monday’s council meeting.

Wilson City

WILSON — The City of Wilson has decided to purchase the building north of city hall. At the Feb. 16 council meeting, approval was given to purchase the Robinson garage from the Wilson Foundation for no more than $20. The garage is currently being used to house the city van.

Kanopolis City

KANOPOLIS — A citizen who was bitten by a dog had several questions for the Kanopolis City Council during the Feb. 9 monthly meeting. Pauline Zvolanek asked what will be done to the dog that bit her. Mayor Anthony Hopkins said that it is up to the court and Kanopolis Chief of Police Jeff Weigel.
