Wrestling advances 5 to state

Hicks, Homolka head to state wrestling

RUSSELL — The Ellsworth girls’ wrestling team competed at the KSHAA 3-2-1 A Regional West Tournament in Russell Feb. 14-15 where they placed 24th out of 30 teams and advanced senior Riley Rodriguez and sophomore Sophie Homolka to the state tournament.Homolka wrestled in the 145-lb.

Five wrestlers place first individually

MINNEAPOLIS — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams competed at the NCAA League meet Feb. 6 at Minneapolis. The boys placed fourth out of six teams with 115 points while the girls placed second out of six teams with 113.5 points.

Boys drop 2 basketball games

GYPSUM — The Ellsworth boys’ basketball team played against Southeast of Saline Friday, Jan. 31, on the road. The Trojans won, 61-58.The Bearcats pulled out one of the strongest starts possible. They spent eight minutes of the game completely steamrolling their opponents.

Girls dominate basketball

GYPSUM — The Ellsworth girls’ basketball team played the Southeast of Saline Trojans Friday, Jan. 31, at Gypsum, and won 49-39.The game got off to an excellent start, with the Bearcats almost immediately seizing control.

Girls finish 2-1 at Hoisington tourney

HOISINGTON — The Ellsworth girls’ basketball team competed in the Hoisington Tournament Jan. 20-25. The team walked away from the competition with two wins and one loss.The tournament started Jan. 21 with a successful game against the Hoisington Cardinals. The Bearcats finished with a 35-29 victory.

Boys fall short at Hoisington tourney

HOISINGTON —The Ellsworth boys’ basketball team played at the Hoisington Tournament, wich ran Jan. 20-25.The week yielded mixed results, with only one win, and two losses.The tourney started strong for the Bearcats Jan. 21, with a tight 39-38 win over the Ellinwood Eagles.

Girls’ basketball team plays two close games

SALINA — The Ellsworth girls’ basketball team squeezed out a win against Sacred Heart Knights Jan. 17 on the road, 54-51.The Bearcats started on extremely strong foot.The first quarter was an active one for both teams.The first quarter ended 16-10, Ellsworth.The tide shifted in the second quarter.

Five Bearcats place at home wrestling tourney

The Ellsworth Bearcats hosted 12 area schools Jan. 11 for the 51st annual Ellsworth Invitational Wrestling Tournament at the Ellsworth Jr./Sr. High School gym. The Bearcat team finished sixth overall out of 13 teams.
