Drovers receives major state grant

For the second time in its 20-year history, the National Drovers Hall of Fame has received a major state grant to help restore downtown Ellsworth’s signature Insurance Building. The award from the Heritage Trust Fund for $69,000 was announced this weekend on the foundation’s website.

CPMS in Bushton targeted for closure

HOLYROOD — After months of speculation and discussion, the Central Plains USD 112 board of education finally targeted Central Plains Middle School in Bushton for closure. The motion came during an April 30 special board meeting at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood.

‘Wait time’ at clinic is a ECMC concern

Ellsworth County Medical Center chief executive officer Andrew Bair discussed a topic at the April 17 meeting of the hospital board of directors that many rural health clinic patients are already aware of — the growing wait time to see a provider.

Larry Laas named 2019 Hall of Fame recipient

Larry Laas, 7-12 counselor in the USD 307 Ell-Saline School District, has been named this year’s Kansas Counseling Association Hall of Fame Recipient. Prior to Ell-Saline, Laas was a counselor in USD 333 at Concordia High School.

Arensman donates grant to historical society

Thanks to the generosity of Sue Arensman of Ellsworth, the Ellsworth County Historical Society is now $2,500 closer to their goal of renovating the Hodgden House Museum in Ellsworth.

Ellsworth County Health Department’s administrator to retire

Brenda Buehler, administrator of the Ellsworth County Health Department, announced during Monday’s meeting of the Ellsworth County commissioners, that she plans to retire Friday, May 31. Buehler began working at the health department as a nurse in April, 2007.

Reconstruction of the taxiway at the Ellsworth Airport took one more step forward Monday as the Ellsworth City Council approved a $257,859 bid from Vogts Parga Construction LLC of Newton for the work. The bid is contingent on receipt of funding by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Building to start on rentals

Overcast skies and a stiff north wind didn’t dampen spirits Monday morning as Joiner Construction of Ellinwood broke ground on its Kansas Housing Resource Corporation Moderate Housing project along Prairie Lane west of the First Bank Kansas building in Ellsworth.
